The graphic attached shows that although the basin-wide peak number of storms over the past 100 years falls on Sept 10th, the dates of hurricane landfalls in South Florida going back to 1865 tells a slightly different story. Out of the 46 hurricanes that have either directly or indirectly struck mainland South Florida since 1865, 28 have made landfall after September 10th (61 %). This is a significant statistic and illustrates the fact that we are historically vulnerable to hurricanes in the month of October – well after the “peak” of hurricane season.
