1st Redland GrowFest-organic farming- (October 13-14) October 5, 2012

GrowFest, is supported by the Florida Organic Growers and Consumers Association and several other organizations.

Come to see us on October 13-14 at the the Fruit & Spice Park (24801 S.W. 187th Avenue, Homestead, Florida 33031)

FOGUF/IFAS Miami-Dade County Extension will be present there with displays, workshops and hands-on activities.

Our Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program staff will also conduct an exchange of old light bulbs for energy saving CFL bulbs and water-wasting showerheads for water-efficient models during this event.

SARE Producer Grants available! September 5, 2012

Attention: You must follow the rules and instructions found in the Call for Proposals

The Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program recognizes the value and importance of on the farm, producer experience in developing solutions to agricultural production challenges

Who can apply?           Any producer or producer organization in the Southern region

What activities are eligible?On the farm research and marketing projects that promote sustainable agriculture

How much will the grants fund?Up to $10,000 for an individual producer or $15,000 for a producer organization.

Successful proposals include:

  • Cooperators.  They can be other farmers, researchers, Extension agents or specialists, governmental or nongovernmental organizations.
  • An outreach plan for providing other producers, researchers, and Extension personnel with an opportunity to learn from project results. Outreach plans may include workshops, field days, fact sheets, or brochures.
  • Clear goals.  Clear and simple goals help ensure a successful project.

When you are ready to apply for a Producer Grant, download the Call for Proposals and carefully follow the instructions.

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS

1. A farmer or rancher or farmer/rancher organization may submit only ONE proposal to the S-SARE Producer Grant program in any grant year. If you have several good ideas, pick the best one and develop it into a great Producer Grant proposal.

2. Successful projects MUST include project cooperators. They can be other farmers, researchers, extension agents, governmental or non-governmental organizations or others who cooperate in project planning, data collection and outreach of results.

3. All projects MUST have an outreach plan for providing other producers, researchers and extension personnel with an opportunity to learn from project results. The outreach plan is very important; sustainable agriculture will only be promoted if other growers learn what you are doing. Outreach may be accomplished through workshops, field days, fact sheets, brochures or other outreach activities.

4. Projects may be funded up to TWO years for a maximum of $10,000 for an individual producer or $15,000 for a producer organization.

5.  You can submit your proposal only on the Southern SARE Proposal Submission System.  Full instructions are found in the Call for Proposals.

Southern SARE administers several grant opportunities. The Producer Grants call for proposals is released each fall.

Job in Horticulture with the University of Florida Extension August 17, 2012

UF-Extension is seeking for a Horticulture Extension Agent to work at Leon County, FL. Please share this information to your colleagues in Horticulture.

Description:

The Horticulture Agent plans, develops, teaches, implements, teaches and evaluates comprehensive and diverse educational programs for commercial clientele and citizens. Program areas of emphasis include 1) environmental landscape management (both homeowner and commercial), using Green Industries Best Management Practices and Florida Friendly Landscaping principles, and 2) commercial and homeowner production of ornamentals, turf, vegetables, herbs, fruits, and nuts, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The agent will manage the demonstration gardens according to Florida Friendly Landscaping principles.

The agent will serve as the educator and coordinator for the county Master Gardener volunteer program. This program requires excellent interpersonal skills and volunteer management experience. The Horticulture Agent will work with other faculty, agencies, businesses and organizations on cooperative educational programs to improve the quality of life for local citizens. The agent will develop and maintain an advisory committee to assist with program design and client needs, collaborate with others to acquire grants, assist/lead interdisciplinary projects, provide service to the 4H Youth Development program and schools, develop creative works (presentations, posters, slide shows, website and social media development, media, etc.) and write non-technical people-friendly publications. The agent will assume other duties as assigned by the County Extension Director and the District Extension Director.
