It’s A Bird… It’s A Plane… It’s A Whitefly!!! July 13, 2012
I guess they never asked Superman to get rid of whitefly pests! Otherwise it would have been a painful defeat for the super hero against thousands of little warriors (each adult is approx. 2 mm long)
Whiteflies love South Florida and I am not kidding. Go outside and look at some palms or that black, sticky and sugary substance aka “honeydew” all over Miami-Dade county cars and landscape…yup! That was probably caused by an innocent whitefly population.
If you are annoyed by these white fellows, imagine growers and landscapers who have to deal with thousands of whiteflies attacking their crops. Just as an example, Ficus (rubber trees) used in fences are a heaven on Earth for one type of whitefly. Another whitefly likes pretty much any green plant (they are voracious)…Homeowners, pest control agencies, municipalities and green industry in general are literally pulling their hair to manage this pest.
The University of Florida Extension Office located in Homestead is putting together a program: “Whiteflies for ornamentals on in South Florida” August 7th with two Ornamental entomologists, your UF-Extension agent and industry representatives will be together in the same location for you to get all the research based information needed to learn how to identify and understand better types of management based on an accurate identification of each type of whitefly.
