Job Description (Trabajo) in Homestead, FL

Position Type: Part-Time in Homestead (Miami-Dade)

The applicant will assist the Nursery Owner of a 10 acre tropical fruit grove with sugar apple, mamey & sapodilla and a very small nursery of mostly rare palms. (El trabajador apoyará en un vivero de 10 acres de frutas tropicales y palmeras)

You will work from 2 to 3 days per week/8 hours per day. (3 dias por semana/8 horas por día) You will take care of propagation, weeding and general management of nursery plants. (Mantiene las plantas en buen estado sin mala hierbas y replantando cuando se necesite)

You will evaluate the irrigation, light and wind problems and report them. You will pick up fruits and place them ready to sell plants both at the Nursery.

Ayuda al dueño a recoger las frutas y las pone en cajas para venta. Assists the Nursery with facility concerns as they arise so as to maintain the nursery in good repair at all times. Apoya al dueño con problemas que observen en el cuidado del vivero.

Skills / Requirements – Requerimientos • No previous horticultural/nursery experience required. No necesita experiencia previa • Ability to follow instructions and be self-motivated. Payment: • Starts @ 8.50/hr with increases as they gain experience. Pago es $8.50 por hora a comenzar

5. Ability to work closely with Principals & co-workers (must be a team player) to accomplish tasks at hand.

6. Other duties associated with landscape maintenance

7. Light duty @ nursery, including fertilization and pest control.

8. Possible light errands, if no one else is available. Normal Hours M-Th, 8:00-5:00. Fridays and Saturdays will be available at certain periods of the year. Part-time: Flexible schedule 2-3 days per week.

Requirements:

 1. One year of Professional Experience required working in Landscape Maintenance or degree-coursework i n Horticulture or related field.

Ability to identify plant species by name a plus.

2. Knowledge of pruning preferred.

3. Knowledge of chemical & organic pesticides/fertilizers, including rates and applications a plus.

4. Ability to work in a fast paced setting with varying tasks to complete.

5. Able to lift 40 pounds.

6. Self starter and highly organized.

7. Motivated.

8. Fluent English (bi-lingual a plus).

9. Florida Drivers License required with a good Driving Record. Ability to drive a 12,000 lb. GVW Delivery Truck a plus.

10. Major in biology, botany, horticulture, architecture or science preferred.

11. Outgoing and must enjoy exercise.

12. Strong communication skills.

13. Knowledge of green walls and green roofs a plus.

14. Passport a plus.

15. Background profile & drug test will be conducted on qualified applicants

Description:

The Horticulture Agent plans, develops, teaches, implements, teaches and evaluates comprehensive and diverse educational programs for commercial clientele and citizens. Program areas of emphasis include 1) environmental landscape management (both homeowner and commercial), using Green Industries Best Management Practices and Florida Friendly Landscaping principles, and 2) commercial and homeowner production of ornamentals, turf, vegetables, herbs, fruits, and nuts, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The agent will manage the demonstration gardens according to Florida Friendly Landscaping principles.

The agent will serve as the educator and coordinator for the county Master Gardener volunteer program. This program requires excellent interpersonal skills and volunteer management experience. The Horticulture Agent will work with other faculty, agencies, businesses and organizations on cooperative educational programs to improve the quality of life for local citizens. The agent will develop and maintain an advisory committee to assist with program design and client needs, collaborate with others to acquire grants, assist/lead interdisciplinary projects, provide service to the 4H Youth Development program and schools, develop creative works (presentations, posters, slide shows, website and social media development, media, etc.) and write non-technical people-friendly publications. The agent will assume other duties as assigned by the County Extension Director and the District Extension Director.
